Four things account for most of the spread on a bathroom remodeling job. They are the questions to put to every estimator, because the answers decide where in the range your own quote lands.

Scope, more than finishesA surface-level refresh and a full gut are different projects that both get called a bathroom remodel.
Moving plumbingLeaving fixtures where they are keeps the price down. Relocating a toilet or shower drain is the single biggest cost jump.
Tile vs acrylicAn acrylic surround installs in a day. A tiled shower is days of skilled labor and costs accordingly.
Fixture tierFinish-visible items carry nearly all the spread. Floor tile alone ranges more than fifteenfold between basic ceramic and natural stone.

What Does Bathroom Remodeling Cost*?

These are general national planning ranges for other projects, not the estimate from the calculator above. Use them to compare typical costs across home improvement projects.

Bathroom Remodeling runs from about $4,200 for tub-to-shower conversion up to $73,500 for master bath expansion, installed, at national average wages. Within any one scope the low end is a lean independent contractor fitting mid-grade material and the high end is a national in-home-sales company fitting premium material. Both are prices real homeowners pay for the same nominal job.

Does Where You Live Affect Renovation Costs?

Yes. Where you live can affect what you pay, especially when it comes to labor. Contractors in areas with higher local wages typically have higher labor costs, which can increase the overall price of a project. Labor is only one part of the total, though, so a higher local wage does not raise the whole price by the same amount. Roughly 33% of a bathroom remodeling job is labor, so a metro paying 20% more than the national wage adds about 7% to the total rather than 20%. Choose your area in the calculator above to see an estimate adjusted for local labor costs.

Where Do These Numbers Come From?

We use wage data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics for that specific trade, May 2025, along with current material pricing recorded per product from retailers and manufacturers. We also adjust labor costs for your area to give you a more useful starting point. These are planning estimates, not contractor quotes. Your actual cost will depend on your home, project details, material choices, and contractor, so we recommend getting at least three written quotes before making a final decision.
