# How Much Does Tile Floor Installation Cost? | RYH

> How Much Does Tile Floor Installation Cost? Estimated cost $7-$19/sq ft, what drives the price, and what a fair quote includes.

**$7-$19/sq ft***: installed, and where a floor lands depends on the tile itself, the size of the pieces, the pattern they are set in, and how much has to be built up underneath them first

*All cost estimates on this page are planning estimates, not quotes. Actual costs vary by location, project scope, materials, site conditions, and contractor. [See methodology and sources.](/how-we-calculate-costs/index.md)

## Why Tile Prices Vary So Widely

More of a tile number is labor than in any other floor on this site, and most of that labor is decided before the first tile is set.

- **Material.** Glazed ceramic is the entry point. Porcelain is denser and harder to cut, so it costs more to buy and more to install. Natural stone adds weight, sealing and slower handling.
- **Piece size.** Large-format tile needs a much flatter substrate, because a long tile bridges a hump and rocks. Mosaic goes the other way: more pieces, more grout, more hours.
- **Pattern.** A straight grid wastes least. Diagonals and herringbone raise cut time and the waste factor, which our own materials breakdown allows for at up to 15%.
- **What goes under it.** Backer board, an uncoupling membrane or full waterproofing are different scopes at different prices, and the room dictates which.
- **Tear-out.** Our materials breakdown puts tile removal at $2–$4 per square foot, at the higher end when it was glued down. It is the most labor-intensive demolition in flooring.

In a bathroom the fixtures do the damage. Cuts around a toilet flange, a vanity and a tub take longer per square foot than open floor, which is why a small bathroom prices high per square foot and a large kitchen prices low.

## What a Tile Quote Should Include

Ask the bid to name three things it usually does not: the substrate, the setting material and the grout. "Tile installation" is not a scope. Backer board over plywood is a different job from an uncoupling membrane, and a waterproofed floor is different again.

The failure mode specific to tile is deflection. Tile and grout do not bend, so a floor that flexes underfoot cracks grout lines and eventually tiles, however well it was set. If your joists bounce, the fix is under the tile, not in it, and it belongs in the quote as its own line before anyone discusses pattern.

Also look for:

- Mortar matched to both tile and substrate, and whether large-format tile will be back-buttered.
- Grout type and joint width, plus sealing where the grout or stone needs it. Epoxy grout costs more to work with and needs no sealing.
- Soft joints at the perimeter and at changes of plane. A floor with no room to move cracks at the wall.
- Edge profiles and thresholds, and pulling and resetting the toilet on any bathroom job.

Commonly excluded: stiffening a bouncy floor, replacing subfloor found damaged during demolition, trimming doors for the added height, and a heated mat, which is a separate system with its own electrical work.

## How Long Tile Takes

Setting is two to four days for a typical room, longer for stone or an intricate pattern, plus a day at the front for demolition and substrate work.

The wait afterwards is chemistry and it is not negotiable. Mortar cures before grouting, and grout cures before the floor takes normal traffic, with heavy furniture later still. Walking on it early does not just mark it, it deforms grout that has not set. Plan for the room to be out of use, which matters most when it is the only bathroom in the house. Our [flooring timeline guide](/articles/floor-installation-timeline/index.md) lists the stages by material.

## Ceramic vs. Porcelain vs. Natural Stone

All three sit inside the range on this page. They separate on density, which drives both the install cost and what the floor asks of you later.

| | Glazed ceramic | Porcelain | Natural stone |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Water absorption | Higher | Very low | Varies by stone |
| Cutting | Easiest | Slower, harder blades | Slow, and it can chip |
| Color through the body | Surface glaze only | Often through-body | Natural throughout |
| Sealing | No | No | Yes, and repeatedly |
| Weight on the structure | Moderate | Moderate | Heaviest |

## When Tile Is the Right Call

Tile is the default where water is routine and the floor has to last: bathrooms, entryways, mudrooms, laundries. It is also the only floor here that pairs with a heated mat.

It is the wrong call over a floor structure that flexes, unless the flexing is fixed first. It is a poor fit where the finished height cannot rise, because the substrate build-up is real and doors and appliances have to clear it. And it is the wrong choice in a bedroom or family room where warmth and quiet matter.

## Formats and Finishes

Within one material, format decides the labor.

- **Rectified large-format.** Edges machine-cut for very thin grout joints. The most seamless look, and the flattest substrate demanded by anything here.
- **Wood-look plank tile.** Long, narrow porcelain. Reads as wood, tolerates water like tile, and takes longer to lay than a square of the same area.
- **Standard field tile.** Squares and rectangles in common sizes. The efficient middle, and where most budgets land.
- **Mosaic and sheet-mounted tile.** Small pieces on a mesh backing, used for slip resistance and shower floors. The highest labor per square foot here.
- **Natural stone.** Marble, travertine, slate and limestone, each with its own porosity and sealing schedule.

Finish matters as much as format in a wet room. A polished surface is slick when wet and a textured one is not, and tile carries a published slip-resistance measurement you can ask for.

## Flooring Installation Companies, Ranked by Real Customer Rating

Floor Coverings International

★★★★★ 4.9 Google · pooled across 86 US locations (16,131 reviews) as of August 2026

Design Center on Wheels: 3,000+ samples in your home. Strong rating across 250+ franchises.

![Remy](/images/remy/face-6aa3719e.png) Remy's Take

Floor Coverings International brings its full sample selection to your home, so you can compare flooring and carpet against your own walls and lighting before deciding. Homeowners across the franchise consistently name their local design consultant and describe an honest process, including being pointed toward a smaller repair instead of a bigger job they did not need. Installers are described moving furniture before starting and putting it back after. Local owners personally reply to reviews by name. Because each location is independently owned, ask how long the installation warranty runs and what is covered if a floating floor like LVP or laminate ever shifts.

Refloor

★★★★★ 4.9 Google · pooled across 16 US locations (15,675 reviews) as of August 2026

4-Part Lifetime Guarantee covering labor, gaps, plank replacement and a half-price replacement promise. 5-day install in MI, IN, OH, IL, KY.

![Remy](/images/remy/face-6aa3719e.png) Remy's Take

Refloor fits luxury vinyl plank and little else: a narrow specialism, stocked, with installs often landing the day after you choose. Reviewers across its Midwest, Southeast and Northeast branches consistently name their installers and describe real care for the rest of the house along the way: furniture moved and reset, old carpet hauled off, subfloors levelled and repaired before the new floor goes down, and the site cleaned up as the crew works. The sales consultation draws the same kind of specific praise: homeowners name their rep and describe a clear walk-through of product, cost and the installation process before anything is decided. Because Refloor installs its own product, its service covers floors it originally put in; if you are finishing or repairing an existing floor from another installer, ask up front whether that is in scope. Their guarantee has four parts and is worth reading closely: the gap-free promise excludes gaps caused by subfloor movement or moisture, which is how most plank gapping actually happens, and the whole guarantee depends on completing a walk-through on the final day of installation.

50Floor

★★★★★ 4.6 Google · pooled across 17 US locations (16,795 reviews) as of August 2026

Shop-at-home flooring with a Gold Star Installation Warranty and a 50%-credit upgrade program. Southeast and Mid-Atlantic focus.

![Remy](/images/remy/face-6aa3719e.png) Remy's Take

50Floor brings the flooring samples to your home, so you choose in your own light against your own furniture, and quotes the whole job in one visit. Homeowners describe a consultant who laid out a wide price range without pushing a decision (walking through materials and options rather than steering toward the most expensive one) and installers come up by name for clean, efficient work. Two programs are worth understanding properly before you sign. The Gold Star Warranty covers installation-related problems, and their own materials describe its term two different ways, so ask which one applies to your contract and get it in writing. The Lifetime Love Your Floors Guarantee is a credit worth half your original price toward a replacement floor from 50Floor: a credit rather than a refund, and it has to replace all the original areas.

Express Flooring

★★★★★ 4.4 Google · pooled across 10 US locations (7,770 reviews) as of August 2026

Same-week installation in AZ, TX, NV, NM, OK, CA. Lifetime labor warranty on all installs.

![Remy](/images/remy/face-6aa3719e.png) Remy's Take

Express Flooring covers Arizona, California, Nevada, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas, and stocks its own flooring rather than special-ordering it: the reason installs can often start within days of the in-home visit rather than weeks. Reviewers across its markets consistently name their installers, and the recurring praise is for speed: a full house of vinyl plank finished in a day and a half, a room of carpet installed the same week it was chosen. On a larger job, expect the crew to move furniture from every room at once rather than staging room by room, so ask how that will work around your household before scheduling. Their published disclaimers are worth reading before you sign rather than after: the installation warranty is limited, does not transfer to a new owner, and after the first two years the labor cost on any claim falls to you. Carpet cover also depends on documented annual professional cleaning, so keep the receipts.

National Floors Direct

★★★★★ 4.1 Google · pooled across 10 US locations (3,568 reviews) as of August 2026

Best shop-at-home flooring brand in the Northeast. Deep New England installer network.

![Remy](/images/remy/face-6aa3719e.png) Remy's Take

National Floors Direct moves fast: many homeowners get an installation date within a day or two of choosing their flooring, and reviewers across its Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, Florida and Texas markets consistently describe crews who move the furniture, work quickly, and clean up before they leave. The other strength reviewers name most is the shop-at-home consultation itself: a rep who brings samples to your house and lays out the options without much back-and-forth. Three things are worth locking down before you sign. Their price-match guarantee only holds if you bring a dated, written competing quote in on that first visit, not later. The standard right-to-cancel window is short and enforced strictly, so read that clause the day you sign. And if your subfloor needs extra prep once the old flooring comes up, that can add to the price, so ask how that is handled ahead of time.

Empire Today

★★★★★ 4.4 Google · pooled across 40 US locations (64,918 reviews) as of August 2026

75+ markets nationwide. Next-day carpet installation for in-stock styles.

![Remy](/images/remy/face-6aa3719e.png) Remy's Take

Empire Today is built around convenience: a shop-at-home consultation with installation often available within a day or two, on exclusive lines like WhisperHOME® carpet and AquaDefense® waterproof LVP. The consultation is what reviewers praise most, and specifically: they name the consultant who came to the house, describe the visit as unhurried, and often mention that the price held up well against other quotes they had already collected. Installation crews draw the same kind of specific praise: arriving on time, walking the job before starting, and cleaning up before they leave. Because flooring performance can change over the life of a floor, ask now what the warranty covers if a plank ever lifts or separates down the road, not just what is covered on installation day, and get a direct service contact in writing at the time of sale.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### How much does it cost to install tile floor*?

Tile runs $7–$19 per square foot installed. The material is only part of the number. Piece size, pattern, the substrate underneath and the removal of whatever is there now move it as much as the tile you pick.

### How much does ceramic or porcelain tile installation cost*?

Both fall inside the range above, with porcelain typically the dearer of the two: it is denser, so it costs more to buy and takes longer to cut.

### What does it cost to tile a bathroom floor?

Per square foot, a bathroom usually prices at the upper end. It is a small area full of obstacles, and cuts around a toilet, a vanity and a tub take longer per square foot than open floor. Waterproofing and resetting the toilet add scope a bedroom floor never has.

### How much does tiling a bathroom cost*?

For the floor alone, use the range on this page with the small-room caveat above. A full bathroom project is a different scope, since walls, a shower pan and plumbing are priced separately from the floor.

### Can you walk on new tile floors right away?

No. Mortar cures before grouting and grout cures before traffic, with heavy furniture later still. Your installer should give you the product's own schedule, and it is worth planning around rather than testing.

### How much does it cost to remove old tile before installing new flooring*?

Our own flooring materials breakdown puts tile removal at $2–$4 per square foot, higher where the tile was glued down. It is the most labor-intensive removal in flooring, and the one most likely to reveal a subfloor problem underneath.
