# How Much Does Laminate Flooring Installation Cost? | RYH

> How Much Does Laminate Flooring Installation Cost? Estimated cost $5-$16/sq ft, what drives the price, and what a fair quote includes.

**$5-$16/sq ft***: the same range we publish for luxury vinyl plank, because the installed scope is the same work, and within it the number moves with the AC wear rating, the core density and the underlayment

*All cost estimates on this page are planning estimates, not quotes. Actual costs vary by location, project scope, materials, site conditions, and contractor. [See methodology and sources.](/how-we-calculate-costs/index.md)

## What Moves a Laminate Quote

Laminate is a printed decorative layer and a hard wear coat over a wood-composite core. Everything that moves the price is one of those layers, or the thing underneath them.

- **AC rating.** The industry abrasion class printed on the box, from light residential up to commercial use. It is the fastest way to compare two products that look the same.
- **Core density and thickness.** A denser fiberboard core in a thicker plank feels more solid, sounds less hollow and prices above a thin one. Thickness is also what makes a locking joint survive seasonal movement.
- **Water-resistant construction.** Sealed edges and treated cores cost more. They buy time against a spill. They do not make the core waterproof, and no laminate warranty reads as though they do.
- **Underlayment.** Some planks have it attached; otherwise it is a separate choice. Our own materials breakdown prices foam at $0.20–$0.50 per square foot and cork, noticeably better for sound and warmth, at $0.50–$1.50.
- **Texture and edge detail.** Embossed-in-register texture and bevelled edges both cost more than a flat, smooth plank.

Then there is the room. Laminate floats, so long runs need their expansion allowance planned and wide doorways need a transition rather than a continuous run. A house of small rooms collects transition strips the way a tile job collects cuts.

## What a Laminate Quote Should Cover

Laminate warranties are unusually specific about installation, and that is what to read a bid against. Most name a required underlayment or vapour retarder, a maximum subfloor moisture level, a flatness tolerance and a minimum expansion gap. An installation that misses any of them can void the warranty on a floor that is otherwise fine, and homeowners rarely find out until they make a claim.

So ask the bid to state:

- The product by name, with its AC rating and plank thickness.
- The underlayment being used, and whether it is the one the warranty requires. Over a slab, a vapour retarder is not optional.
- A moisture test on concrete, plus the flatness figure the plank requires and what happens to the price if the room misses it.
- Expansion gap at every wall and pipe, and where the floor will be broken up at doorways and long spans.
- Silicone or a sealed edge anywhere the floor meets a water source. That is the only defense a wood-composite core has.

Ask specifically what happens to the expansion gap behind the baseboard. A floor pinned by trim installed too tightly will peak at a seam once the season changes, and that is an installation fault rather than a product one.

## How Long Laminate Takes

One to two days of installation for most rooms, and the floor is walkable straight away.

The wait is at the front. Laminate acclimates in the room before it goes down, and the reason is specific to it: the core is wood-based, so it takes on and gives off moisture with the air in your house, and a plank locked in at the wrong moisture content keeps moving afterwards. That shows up as a gap or a peaked seam months later. Unopened boxes stacked flat in the destination room at normal living temperature is the whole procedure, and a contractor who delivers and installs on the same morning is skipping it. Our [timeline guide](/articles/floor-installation-timeline/index.md) sets it beside the other materials.

## Laminate vs. Vinyl Plank on Cost

These two pages publish the same $5–$16 per square foot deliberately. **Laminate is priced together with LVP here because the installed cost is the same:** a floating floor, over an underlayment, with the same expansion gaps, transitions and disposal. The labor does not know which product it is clicking together.

What differs is the failure mode, and it is not symmetrical.

- **Laminate fails at moisture.** Water reaching a seam swells the fiberboard core, and swelling is irreversible. The affected planks are replaced, not dried out.
- **LVP does not swell, but it dents.** A vinyl core is softer, so heavy point loads mark it and a thin wear layer scuffs.
- **Neither can be refinished.** When the wear layer on either is gone, the floor is replaced.

Laminate's own advantages are real: the surface is typically harder than a thin-wear-layer vinyl, and a dense core sounds more solid underfoot than a cheap floating vinyl over foam. Which one belongs in your house is an editorial question rather than a pricing one, and our [laminate vs. luxury vinyl plank](/articles/laminate-vs-vinyl-plank/index.md) comparison takes it apart properly, and the [LVP cost page](/vinyl-plank-flooring-cost/index.md) covers the same scope from the vinyl side.

## When Laminate Is the Right Call

Laminate belongs in dry, above-grade rooms: living rooms, bedrooms, dining rooms, hallways, offices. Its wear surface is hard, which makes it a sensible pick for a house with dogs' claws and heavy foot traffic, and it gets you a convincing wood look for less than wood costs.

It is the wrong call in a bathroom, a laundry or a basement, and water-resistant construction does not change that answer. It is also the wrong call if a hollow click underfoot will bother you every day, so walk on a sample over the underlayment being quoted rather than a showroom display. If a buyer's reaction is part of the decision, our [hardwood page](/hardwood-floor-installation-cost/index.md) covers what the alternative costs.

## Wear Classes and Constructions

The differences that matter on a laminate spec sheet are all quantified, which makes it easier to shop than most floors.

- **Wear class.** The AC rating steps from light residential up into commercial use. Buy for the busiest room the product is going into, not the average room.
- **Thickness.** Thinner planks are cheaper and sound more hollow. Thicker planks feel more like wood and tolerate a slightly less perfect subfloor.
- **Water-resistant laminate.** Sealed joints and treated cores, sold on spill tolerance rather than immersion. Useful in a kitchen. Not a bathroom floor.
- **Surface finish.** High-gloss shows every scratch and footprint. Embossed-in-register texture lines up with the printed grain rather than repeating over it.

Laminate is a common do-it-yourself floor, and clicking planks together is genuinely straightforward. What a professional bid buys is the unglamorous half: flatness, moisture testing, acclimation, expansion gaps, doorway breaks and warranty compliance. Those are also the parts that cost money to redo.

## Flooring Installation Companies, Ranked by Real Customer Rating

Floor Coverings International

★★★★★ 4.9 Google · pooled across 86 US locations (16,131 reviews) as of August 2026

Design Center on Wheels: 3,000+ samples in your home. Strong rating across 250+ franchises.

![Remy](/images/remy/face-6aa3719e.png) Remy's Take

Floor Coverings International brings its full sample selection to your home, so you can compare flooring and carpet against your own walls and lighting before deciding. Homeowners across the franchise consistently name their local design consultant and describe an honest process, including being pointed toward a smaller repair instead of a bigger job they did not need. Installers are described moving furniture before starting and putting it back after. Local owners personally reply to reviews by name. Because each location is independently owned, ask how long the installation warranty runs and what is covered if a floating floor like LVP or laminate ever shifts.

Refloor

★★★★★ 4.9 Google · pooled across 16 US locations (15,675 reviews) as of August 2026

4-Part Lifetime Guarantee covering labor, gaps, plank replacement and a half-price replacement promise. 5-day install in MI, IN, OH, IL, KY.

![Remy](/images/remy/face-6aa3719e.png) Remy's Take

Refloor fits luxury vinyl plank and little else: a narrow specialism, stocked, with installs often landing the day after you choose. Reviewers across its Midwest, Southeast and Northeast branches consistently name their installers and describe real care for the rest of the house along the way: furniture moved and reset, old carpet hauled off, subfloors levelled and repaired before the new floor goes down, and the site cleaned up as the crew works. The sales consultation draws the same kind of specific praise: homeowners name their rep and describe a clear walk-through of product, cost and the installation process before anything is decided. Because Refloor installs its own product, its service covers floors it originally put in; if you are finishing or repairing an existing floor from another installer, ask up front whether that is in scope. Their guarantee has four parts and is worth reading closely: the gap-free promise excludes gaps caused by subfloor movement or moisture, which is how most plank gapping actually happens, and the whole guarantee depends on completing a walk-through on the final day of installation.

50Floor

★★★★★ 4.6 Google · pooled across 17 US locations (16,795 reviews) as of August 2026

Shop-at-home flooring with a Gold Star Installation Warranty and a 50%-credit upgrade program. Southeast and Mid-Atlantic focus.

![Remy](/images/remy/face-6aa3719e.png) Remy's Take

50Floor brings the flooring samples to your home, so you choose in your own light against your own furniture, and quotes the whole job in one visit. Homeowners describe a consultant who laid out a wide price range without pushing a decision (walking through materials and options rather than steering toward the most expensive one) and installers come up by name for clean, efficient work. Two programs are worth understanding properly before you sign. The Gold Star Warranty covers installation-related problems, and their own materials describe its term two different ways, so ask which one applies to your contract and get it in writing. The Lifetime Love Your Floors Guarantee is a credit worth half your original price toward a replacement floor from 50Floor: a credit rather than a refund, and it has to replace all the original areas.

Express Flooring

★★★★★ 4.4 Google · pooled across 10 US locations (7,770 reviews) as of August 2026

Same-week installation in AZ, TX, NV, NM, OK, CA. Lifetime labor warranty on all installs.

![Remy](/images/remy/face-6aa3719e.png) Remy's Take

Express Flooring covers Arizona, California, Nevada, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas, and stocks its own flooring rather than special-ordering it: the reason installs can often start within days of the in-home visit rather than weeks. Reviewers across its markets consistently name their installers, and the recurring praise is for speed: a full house of vinyl plank finished in a day and a half, a room of carpet installed the same week it was chosen. On a larger job, expect the crew to move furniture from every room at once rather than staging room by room, so ask how that will work around your household before scheduling. Their published disclaimers are worth reading before you sign rather than after: the installation warranty is limited, does not transfer to a new owner, and after the first two years the labor cost on any claim falls to you. Carpet cover also depends on documented annual professional cleaning, so keep the receipts.

National Floors Direct

★★★★★ 4.1 Google · pooled across 10 US locations (3,568 reviews) as of August 2026

Best shop-at-home flooring brand in the Northeast. Deep New England installer network.

![Remy](/images/remy/face-6aa3719e.png) Remy's Take

National Floors Direct moves fast: many homeowners get an installation date within a day or two of choosing their flooring, and reviewers across its Northeast, Mid-Atlantic, Florida and Texas markets consistently describe crews who move the furniture, work quickly, and clean up before they leave. The other strength reviewers name most is the shop-at-home consultation itself: a rep who brings samples to your house and lays out the options without much back-and-forth. Three things are worth locking down before you sign. Their price-match guarantee only holds if you bring a dated, written competing quote in on that first visit, not later. The standard right-to-cancel window is short and enforced strictly, so read that clause the day you sign. And if your subfloor needs extra prep once the old flooring comes up, that can add to the price, so ask how that is handled ahead of time.

Empire Today

★★★★★ 4.4 Google · pooled across 40 US locations (64,918 reviews) as of August 2026

75+ markets nationwide. Next-day carpet installation for in-stock styles.

![Remy](/images/remy/face-6aa3719e.png) Remy's Take

Empire Today is built around convenience: a shop-at-home consultation with installation often available within a day or two, on exclusive lines like WhisperHOME® carpet and AquaDefense® waterproof LVP. The consultation is what reviewers praise most, and specifically: they name the consultant who came to the house, describe the visit as unhurried, and often mention that the price held up well against other quotes they had already collected. Installation crews draw the same kind of specific praise: arriving on time, walking the job before starting, and cleaning up before they leave. Because flooring performance can change over the life of a floor, ask now what the warranty covers if a plank ever lifts or separates down the road, not just what is covered on installation day, and get a direct service contact in writing at the time of sale.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### How much does laminate flooring installation cost*?

Laminate runs $5–$16 per square foot installed. Within that, the AC wear rating, the plank thickness and the underlayment do most of the moving, along with how much subfloor preparation the room needs.

### How much does laminate floor installation cost?

The same range. We publish it for laminate and for luxury vinyl plank together, because the installed scope is identical work: a floating floor over an underlayment, with the same transitions, expansion gaps and disposal.

### How much to install laminate flooring?

Use the range above, and get the bid to itemise underlayment, transitions, tear-out and disposal. A house with many small rooms collects more transition strips than one open floor of the same area.

### Laminate vs. vinyl flooring: which is the better option?

That is a fit question rather than a price question, since we publish the same installed range for both. Laminate has a wood-composite core that swells if water reaches a seam; vinyl plank does not swell but dents more easily. Our [full comparison](/articles/laminate-vs-vinyl-plank/index.md) works through feel, sound and durability.

### What is better, laminate or vinyl plank?

Neither is an upgrade of the other, and they cost the same to install here. Where the floor is going decides it: anywhere near water points to vinyl, and a dry room where you want a harder, denser surface underfoot keeps laminate in play.

### Can laminate flooring go in a bathroom?

No. The core is wood-based, so water reaching a seam swells it permanently, and water-resistant products are sold on spill tolerance rather than standing water. For a bathroom, price tile or vinyl plank instead.
